Marriots Way Ultra Marathon and Fun Run – 1 November 2015
A very misty and murky morning, but not too cold, greeted a large number of Jaguars at the start of the Marriotts Way 18 & 36 mile race on the 1st November. Having never done an ultra before, the difference from a normal road race was striking and a far more relaxed affair with no number to collect, no timing chips to attach and a complete lack of any jostling for position on the start line, fingers poised on GPS watch start buttons. A few short words from the organiser, Paul Woodyatt, and we were off. A mixture of surfaces for the run with tarmac foot and cycle paths soon giving way to gravel and dirt paths with only a few very sticky areas. Some great results and what looked like excellent cake at the cafe on Reepham station for the Jaguars who completed the fun run. Well done to Ellie for finishing first lady and 9th overall.
I was the only Jaguar who entered this year to be brave/foolhardy/mad enough to go for the full 36 miles so after a quick pitstop at Reepham I returned to the course to run all the way back to the start in Norwich. My podium finish in the full ultra becomes rather less impressive when I admit that whilst I was indeed the 3rd place finisher this was out of just 3 runners. My first ultra but it will definitely not be my last, finishing in a total time of 7:29:48.
