Club Handicap Series: Race 1 – Swanton Abbott 10k
22 members took part in the first of seven races in this year’s Club Handicap Series where Swanton Abbott (Previous Valentines 10K Course) played host.
It was the “Day of the Dames” as four of the six double digit points went to female members with the top three positions all taken up by ladies. Fiona Baldwin (+6:20 handicap. 54:08 actual time) produced a “phoenix-esque” performance to claim race winner, bagging a healthy 25 points in the process and knocking some four minutes off her predicted finishing time. First male through was Paul Gerber (+12:45 handicap. 50:32 actual time) who finished in 4th place overall and scored 13 points.
Ben Denington came tantalizingly close to sub 40 recording 40:10 actual time. Fastest actual time of the day was posted by Sze-Ming Cheung who ran 39:30. Several entrants ran Pseudo PBs , testimony to the fact that these races can and do bring the best out of members’ abilities and are excellent for confidence boosting. Similarly, a number of members ran the distance for the first time. Again, their performances will set them up well in future affiliated races should they choose to enter them.
