Victory Sprint Triathlon and Grafham Water Duathlon

As if running wasn’t hard enough more of our members took to to the roads and water in multi-sport events this weekend. Andy Mulligan, Jonny Reader and Adele Bushell completed The North Walsham Victory Sprint Triathlon, an event comprising a 300 metre swim, 17k cycle and 3k run. Andy finished 8th overall and first in his age category with a total time of 47:10 (Swim 5:17/Bike 30:37/Run 10:00) whilst Jonny finished in 13th place and 3rd in his age group in a total time of 51:25 (5:17/32:45/11:40). Adele also finished 3rd in her age group in 1:04:22 (8:07/39:52/14:25)

Meanwhile further west conditions were fairly cool at Grafham Water near Huntingdon where Richard and Dawn Collyer had an early start for a duathlon comprising a 10k run 40k cycle and 5k run. Richard finished in a total time of 2.23.12 (46:16/1:11:08/22:55) whilst Dawn came home in 2.51.05 (54:43/1:26:09/27:35).

Wroxham 5k

On another very hot and sunny evening 14 Jags ran the last race in the popular Wroxham 5k Series. First home for the club, 7th overall and 3rd senior man was new member Stephen Cannell.  His time of 16.33 was a new club record taking almost a minute off the previous time. Dean Blake was next home in a new p.b of 19.15. Ken Bowman ran his usual strong race to finish first in his category to post a new age club record of 19.55. Anthony Norris, another new member, recorded a time of 2.13.  Claire Owen is finally getting the speed back into her legs after her marathon and ‘with a little help from her friends’ ran a p.b of 25.12

Ekiden Relays

We had three teams enter the  Ekiden Relays at St Joseph’s College in Ipswich on Sunday 14th July.  The teams came 9th, 11th and 12th  in the mixed category which made it a good inter-club competition.  There are six people in each team running the marathon distance of 26.2 miles over a  2.5k  lap course.  It proved to be the hottest day of the year so far which was excellent for spectators but the 28 degrees was not so kind to the runners.

Snowdonia 7

So called because it takes in 7 of Snowdonia’s toughest mountains, this fell race is 22 miles long and includes 8000 feet of ascent. Although billed as a running event only the very best are able to run the whole course. The race is open to teams of 4 police officers at least 3 of whom must get round carrying a pack containing a set list of safety equipment and clothing. Normally the race attracts wind, rain and freezing temperatures. This year it was on the hottest day recorded in the area since 1976. The heat created conditions which saw over a third of competitors unable to finish and the winners, who normally average just under 5 hours took well over an hour longer. Richard Collyer was part of  a Norfolk team that finished in 8 hours 22 minutes, losing a member en route through dehydration. This was in the top half of the finishers. The last team to finish came in in well over 11 hours. Despite the tough race conditions Richard has vowed to return next year for more of the same.

Norwich Park Run 6th July

Another hot day in the park didn’t deter Lisa Symons from running her 6th p.b of the year. Lisa ran 24.19 taking 40 seconds off her previous time.  Danny Sweatman on his first outing for the club ran a bronze standard time of 21.11.

Humpty Dumpty 10k

As usual the sun came out for the undulating Humpty Dumpty 10k making conditions quite tough, however this did not  prevent 4 Jaguars taking various prizes in their categories. Ellie Bye was first senior female, Colin Robilliard first Male 60-64, Sarah Jay second F45-49 and Beck Durant 3rd F60-64.

Wroxham 5k Series – Race 2

This years second race in the series incorporated the county championships and as such brought out a high quality local field including 19 Jaguars. Once again Jags were amongst the prizes with Colin Robilliard taking the county prize in the 60-64 category and also first place in the race overall 60+category. Sarah Jay and Matt Stone were rewarded for their runs with silver medals in their county categories, whilst Becky Durant took the bronze in hers. Heather Hollister in her first 5k for the club took 2nd place in the overall 60+ race category.

There were also some excellent results for the rest of the club with 8 members running p.b’s, most notably Stephanie Cooke who took 4 minutes from her previous best, Charlotte Harmer who ran  strongly taking a p.b for the second race running, Andy Mulligan who went under 18 minutes for the first time and Mark Harmer who went under 19 minutes for the first time.
