Mersea Island Lions’ Round the Island Race

Lions logo

Mersea Island itself is unique in Essex, being situated only 8 miles from Colchester, but entered via a Causeway, which on occasions is covered by the tide (but never at race times!!), similar to Lindisfarne in the North-East. Approximately 12.2 miles, multi-terrain following the sea wall, beach and very short stretches on-road, all on the flat. The course runs completely round Mersea Island in a clockwise direction.

Matthew Crane Flew the flag for the Jags in this race and came 108th in a time of 1:57:38.  In Matthew’s own words, “It was a tough race, virtually all off road but I managed to get round! I’d do it again and recommend it to others”. Full Results

Alex Moore Relay 2014

norfolk gazelles logo

A record number 16 Jags teams entered this year’s Alex Moore Relay – and we didn’t disappoint when it came to bagging the trophies. In sweltering conditions, a battle for top overall team ensued between 2 Jags teams. In the end, the veteran male runners (Mark Harmer, David Walker & Lawrence Wade) prevailed and came from behind to pip the senior male team (Ben Dennington, Richard Bateson & Andy Mulligan) by a margin of only 30 seconds to win the race in 1:19:46 and claim the Men’s Masters Class with the Senior team winning the Men’s Senior Class in a time of 1:20:16.

Ellie Bye, Dean Blake and Sze-Ming Cheung claimed the Mixed Class and placed fourth overall in a time of 1:26:59.

Over half of the club members participated in the event in what, again, was a successful and enjoyable day for all Jaguars concerned. Full results and details of the relay race.

Parkrun Round-Up: 7 June 2014

In total,  14 members taking part in local Parkruns this week: 2 at Catton; 7 at Norwich; 3 at Blicking  and 2 at Fritton. A special mention goes out to Claire Owen this week who ran her 100th Parkrun at Norwich. Her time of 25:13 wasn’t quite enough to cap off a memorable day with a PB but nevertheless was one of her best times she has recorded for the distance  – with continued injury free and consistent training, it will only be a matter of time. David Hutcheon achieved a course PB at Blickling running a time of 28:15  Members’ Results

Club Handicap Series: Race 2 – Wroxham 5k

handicap wroxham

A certain popular cycling event meant a reduced field for the second handicap race. This didn’t deter 11 Jags from giving good performances at the fast Wroxham course. Some gifts money just can’t buy for your Birthday – one of those was winning the Handicap Race  – and that’s exactly what Jenny Welsh (zero handicap) did. Annette Yeomanson (+3:50) finished 2nd and heads the Women’s series with 36 points, while Paul Gerber continues to lead the Men’s Series coming in third for this race, earning 16 points giving a cumulative total of 29. Fastest actual time was 18:28 recorded by Sze-Ming Cheung (5th: +14:30). Race Director’s Report & Member’s results.

The next race is the Heggart Hall (Road) 7 Miler on 7 August. See Member’s page for more details on the series.
